The University of Sindh was established under the Sind Act No. XVIII 1947 "An Act to establish & incorporate a University in the province of Sind". It was incorporated for the purpose among others of making provisions for the instruction of students and to take all necessary steps to achieve this objective.

The revised Sindh University Act of 1972 envisages the mission of the University as dissemination and advancement of knowledge to bring about socio-economic change in the community. It has been spelled out as under:-

• to provide for instructions in such branches of learning as it may deem fit and to make provisions for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in such manner as it may determine

  to prescribe courses of studies to be conducted by it and the colleges.

• to hold examinations and to award and confer degrees, diplomas, certificate and other academic distinctions to and on persons who have been admitted to and have passed the examinations under prescribed conditions, and

  to establish and maintain teaching departments, schools,colleges, faculties, institutes and centers of learning, to and admit educational institutions to its privileges and to affiliate or disaffiliate educational institutions under prescribed conditions
